Turkey's hyperinflation and the cause. The ending of MMTists.
Turkey's inflation, which had been adjusted due to interest rate hikes before COVID-19, soared to 36% again.
In 2021, Turkish President Erdogan argues that lowering the benchmark interest rate can save the economy.
However, inflation in Turkey was already higher than the economic growth rate, and in such a situation, it is basic to preserve the currency value by raising interest rates and prevent actual income declines by catching inflation first.
Naturally, the economy will be temporarily difficult, but if inflation is left unattended, real income will decrease further in the long run.
However, despite Erdogan being a conservative figure, he applied MMT mindset to cut interest rates and strengthen populist spending policies.
In the process, if the central bank governor who opposes the rate cut is dismissed, it will be dealt with.
As a result, of course, currency value plummeted and inflation soared.
Turkey is currently being sanctioned as a result of anti-Americanism, and the resulting economic improvement is difficult.
In such a situation, a case of proving again that there is no answer only by overusing the currency.
Of course, not everything has been achieved simply by monetary policy, but it is not appropriate as a monetary policy.
There are various causes such as corona inflation, green inflation, U.S. sanctions, populist deficits, and rising costs due to global supply chain reorganization.

다시 돌아온 터키의 하이퍼 인플레이션과 그 원인
- 2020코로나 이전, 금리 인상으로 그나마 조정되던 터키의 인플레이션이 다시금 36%까지 폭등
- 2021년 터키의 에르도안 대통령은 기준금리를 낮춰야지 경제를 살릴 수 있다고 주장
- 하지만 그 시기 터키의 인플레이션은 이미 경제성장률보다 높은 상황이었으며 그러한 상황에서는 금리 인상으로 통화가치를 보전하고, 인플레이션을 먼저 잡아 실질적인 소득 감소를 막는것이 기초
- 당연히 경제는 일시적으로 어렵겠지만, 인플레이션을 방치하면 장기적으로 실질 소득은 더욱 감소
- 하지만 에르도안은 보수계통 인물임에도 불구하고, MMT적 사고방식을 적용하여 되려 금리를 인하하고 포퓰리즘성 지출정책을 강화
- 그 과정에서 금리 인하에 반대하는 중앙은행 총재를 파면 처리
- 결과, 당연히 통화가치는 폭락과 함께 인플레이션 폭등
- 터키는 현재 반미주의의 결과물로 제재를 받고 있으며 이로 인한 경제의 개선이 어려운 상태
- 그러한 상황에서 단지 통화 남발만으로는 답이 없음을 다시금 증명한 사례
- 물론 단순히 통화정책만으로 모든 것이 이루어진 것은 아니나 통화정책으로써 적절하지 못한 방책
- 코로나 인플레이션, 그린플레이션, 미국 제재, 포퓰리즘성 적자, 글로벌 공급망 재편으로 인한 비용 상승 등 다양한 원인이 존재
